Walking in Heather’s Footsteps: A Camino Scholarship in Her Honor

At the heart of every pilgrimage is a story—a story of faith, of discovery, of connection. Heather Strode’s Camino story was one of joy, reflection, and an unbreakable bond with her son, Tucker.

Heather was more than a mother, wife, daughter, sister, and professor—she was a pilgrim in every sense of the word. In the summer of 2024, she set foot on the Camino de Santiago, embracing the challenge, beauty, and spiritual renewal that so many seek on this ancient path. Alongside Tucker, she walked with a full heart, pausing often to take in the wildflower fields that lined the trail. She was in her element, living fully in the moment.

Heather and Tucker had already made plans to return in 2025 to continue their journey. But tragically, on December 31, 2024, Heather passed away in her sleep. Her sudden passing left an immense void, but her spirit—her love for adventure, her kindness, and her passion for the Camino—lives on.

A Scholarship to Honor Heather’s Legacy

To honor Heather’s profound impact on those around her, a memorial scholarship has been created in her name. This scholarship will provide one deserving recipient with the opportunity to experience the Camino de Santiago—a journey Heather cherished deeply.

The application process is simple:

  • Submit a 2-3 minute video answering the question: “Why do I want to walk the Camino de Santiago?”

  • Deadline: February 28, 2025

  • Selection: Heather’s husband, Ted, and her sons, Tucker and Tyler, will choose the recipient.

This scholarship isn’t just about financial support—it’s about continuing Heather’s legacy of embracing life’s journey with an open heart.

Why the Camino?

Heather found peace and fulfillment on the Camino, and she isn’t alone. For centuries, pilgrims from all walks of life have embarked on this path, searching for clarity, faith, and renewal. The Camino offers more than just a physical challenge; it is a space for reflection, for healing, and for forging lifelong connections.

Walking the Camino means slowing down, appreciating the beauty around you, and embracing the moments of solitude and companionship that make the journey so special. It means pausing, like Heather did, to admire a field of wildflowers and simply be present.

Continuing the Journey

Heather’s journey on the Camino may have ended too soon, but her spirit continues to walk with us. This scholarship is an opportunity for someone to step into her shoes, to experience the same sense of wonder, peace, and connection that she did.

If you’ve ever felt the pull of the Camino—the call to step outside of daily life and embark on a transformational journey—we encourage you to apply. Heather’s story reminds us that life is precious, that we should embrace adventure, and that the Camino has a way of revealing exactly what we need to find.
